Over the first two weekends in June, the annual walk for Alzheimer’s hosted by the York Region chapter brought people of all ages to the Briars Resort in Jacksons Point and Richmond Green in Richmond Hill for this worthwhile cause sponsored by Delmanor Elgin Mills. Walks take place in over 150 communities across the country and is the largest fundraising initiative hosted by the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada. Many of those who participate walk in memory of a friend or loved one affected by Alzheimer’s; the feeling surrounding the event is one of personal inspiration and sentiment.
Approximately 750,000 Canadians have been diagnosed and more than 22,000 are afflicted in York Region alone. This year the Alzheimer’s Society of York Region raised in excess of $80,000 with proceeds going to various community-based programming aimed at improving the quality of life for those individuals living with dementia and their families. The funds provide much needed support for education, activities, day programs, awareness and research of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia’s.
The Walk for Alzheimer’s is a fun and family-friendly way to create new memories while sending a message of hope to the almost three quarters of a million Canadians currently living with dementia and the thousands more who care for them.
