Dr. May Cohen is a brilliant Canadian physician and trailblazer in women’s medicine. She came to Delmanor Northtown virtually via Zoom for a question and answer period after Residents were able to view her documentary, “The Gender Lady – The Fabulous Dr. May Cohen”.
Dr. May attended medical school at the University of Toronto at a time when very few medical students were female, and she even graduated at the top of her class!
Following a twenty year career as a family physician, Dr. May became the Associate Dean of Health Services at McMaster University between 1991-1996. She established the Women’s Health Office and instigated the creation of a women’s health curriculum for Ontario medical schools which had international impact.
Dr. Cohen assisted in the promotion of female physicians and remains a committed advocate for women’s health. Dr. Cohen’s accomplishments simply cannot be overstated. Just as few of her accolades include:
- The Ortho Award from the Federation of Medical Women of Canada
- Association of American Medical Colleges Leadership Development Award
- The May Cohen Award for Women mentors was named in her honour
- She was named an officer to the Order of Canada in 2017
- Indicted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame in 2016
This virtual event that was held for the Residents of Delmanor Northtown was a wonderful tribute to Dr. May Cohen and her incredible career and achievements.
