In 1699, French-Canadian explore Jean Baptiste arrived 60 miles south of New Orleans on the eve of the festival and named it Pointe du Mardi Gras. By late 1830, New Orleans held a street procession of masked horseback riders and carriages. The colours of glass beads are gold representing power, purple for justice and green for faith.
